Meet the Skycamp 4.0 Trio: Just Right
8 min read
TLDR: Three sleepers, more interior space, a flexible footprint, and every 4.0 upgrade. The Trio fills the gap, and then some. Let's dive into it.
Why even make a 3-person RTT?
Since 2018, the Skycamp lineup has come in two sizes: the Mini two-person tent and a full-size four-person tent. For a lot of people, neither one was a perfect fit. The Mini felt snug for a couple plus a kid, or the full-size felt too big for the RAV4 or Outback sitting in your driveway. I've spent probably 20+ nights in each 3.0 size tent, and I'm excited to put in some serious time with the Trio, which really hits right in the middle for just about any vehicle.
The Trio sits right between the Duo and Quad. It gives three adults, or two adults and a child, comfortable sleeping space without the extra width and weight of going full Quad. It's the option that matches how a lot of people actually travel.
New to the 4.0 series? The Skycamp 4.0 is the fourth generation of our flagship hardshell rooftop tent, which was the world's first expandable hardshell tent. All three sizes, Duo, Trio, and Quad, share the same updated materials and features. The Trio is the only size that brings a new footprint to the lineup.

How the Trio fits into the 4.0 family:
All three Skycamp 4.0 sizes share the same core technology: the DuraCore™ shell, BreathWeave™ canvas, ThermaSeal™ floor, and super easy deployment. Where they differ is footprint and how many people fit comfortably inside.
Duo sleeps 2 and starts at $4,415. Compact footprint, best for couples or solo travelers on smaller vehicles. Small footprint and the lightest of the 3, coming in at 119-130lbs (depending on your mattress).
Trio sleeps 3 and starts at $4,695. Mid-size footprint, the sweet spot for small families and people driving mid-size SUVs, crossovers, or wagons. This is the new one.
Quad sleeps 4 and starts at $4,965. Full footprint, best for larger groups on full-size trucks and SUVs.

Which vehicles does the Trio fit best?
The Trio works across a wide range of vehicles, but it was designed with mid-size SUVs, crossovers, and wagons in mind. It also works great on full-size trucks and larger SUVs if you want more sleeping room without going all the way to the Quad.
Here are the platforms where it shines:
-
Toyota RAV4 (all trims, including Adventure and TRD Off-Road)
-
Subaru Outback (including Wilderness trim)
-
Toyota 4Runner (pairs well with the iKamper Raconteur rack)
-
Ford Bronco (4-door; confirm your rack load ratings)
-
Honda Passport and Pilot
-
Toyota Tacoma (6 ft bed, overcab or bed rack setup)
-
Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L
-
Full-size trucks like the F-150, Tundra, and Silverado
One important note: always verify your vehicle's dynamic roof load rating before purchasing. The Trio with the foam mattress and mounting hardware weighs around 148 lbs. If you're running an aftermarket rack, use the rack's weight rating as your guide. Our dealer network can help you sort this out if you're not sure.

What's new in the 4.0:
If you're upgrading from a 3.0 or looking at the Skycamp for the first time, here's a plain-language breakdown of what changed and why it matters.
More room, same footprint. Better internal geometry adds about 75 square inches of usable floor space without changing how large the tent looks on your roof. Headroom is up, the windows are bigger, the entrance is wider, and the skylight is larger.
Lighting and more integration. The 4.0 has LED lighting inside the tent and pass-throughs for heating, cooling, or electrical setups. No more workarounds or cheap Amazon options needed.
The shell is stronger and quieter. The DuraCore™ shell uses two layers of fiber-reinforced plastic. This double-layer construction adds durability and traps a thin layer of air between them, which cuts down on road noise and helps keep condensation from building up inside. There's a more ergonomic and aerodynamic shaping to the shell itself.
The canvas actually breathes. BreathWeave™ is a polycotton blend that keeps rain out without relying on heavy waterproof coatings. Because the fabric can breathe, you get less moisture buildup inside the tent, which also means less mold risk when the tent is packed away.
The floor is more insulated. The ThermaSeal™ floor system now comes standard across all 4.0 sizes. It uses a honeycomb aluminum core with a cork layer on top, which insulates better than the old foam-backed floor and feels noticeably warmer underfoot on cold mornings.
Setup is faster. The latches have been repositioned so you're not awkwardly reaching to the corners of the tent. Small change, big difference when you're setting up in the rain.
There's an upgraded mattress option. The standard foam mattress is included. For $80 to $100 more, you can upgrade to a 3-inch self-inflating air mattress that offers better support and extra insulation from the floor, which is particularly helpful in cold conditions.

Is the Trio right for you?
Say you already own a Skycamp Mini. Is the Trio worth upgrading to?
These two tents are built for different situations. The Skycamp Mini is a 2-person design made for smaller vehicles, and it has a different footprint. The Trio shares a lot of similarities, but is a 3-person tent with everything the 4.0 platform offers. If your crew has grown or you want more room on longer trips, the Trio is a meaningful step up in both space and all-weather performance.
Is the Trio actually rated for four seasons?
Yes. The 4.0 series keeps iKamper's four-season rating. The shell, canvas, and floor all contribute to cold-weather performance. The optional air mattress adds another layer of insulation from below if you're camping in really cold conditions.
My RAV4 crossbars are rated to 165 lbs. Can I mount the Trio?
The Trio with the foam mattress and included mounting hardware weighs around 145 lbs, so you'd have about 20 lbs of margin. That works on paper, but it's worth confirming your specific crossbar model before committing. A lot of RAV4 owners end up choosing an aftermarket rack with a higher rating for extra peace of mind or more custimizable mounting for other gear. Reach out to our dealer network and they can walk you through the options.
Does the Trio work with the iKamper Raconteur rack?
The Raconteur rack is currently available for the Toyota 4Runner and Toyota Tacoma. If you're on one of those platforms, the Trio pairs naturally with it. For other vehicles, you'll use your existing crossbars or a compatible aftermarket rack.
Where can I see the Trio in person?
The Skycamp 4.0 series is available now through iKamper's direct channel and dealer network across the US and Canada. Stop by our Seattle Showroom, use the dealer locator to find someone near you, or configure yours online and ship direct.
